[fol. 176] Sir I received a letter from Mr. Arnot the young Gentleman my Mother recommended to your favour, with an account of your extraordinary ability to him And the kindness you have done him, of which he has the most grateful sense. My Mother heard with much satisfaction that you were pleased to shew such regard to her recommendation after so long an interruption of acquaintance; And has ordered me to return her hearty thanks with her humblest respects to you: She hopes you will continue your kindness to Mr Arnot, who, I am persuaded will by his good behaviour shew that he deserved the character formerly given of him. And that he is not unworthy of your favour on which he depends very much, being resolved entirely to follow your orders as to his being disposed of to business. May God Almighty long preserve you to be useful I am with much respect Sir Your most humble servant James Monro Ketle July 5 1726

James Monro is Sloane’s cousin. Monro’s mother was Jane Monro (née Bailie), a niece of Sloane’s mother. For a letter from Jane Monro (née Bailie), see: Sloane MS 4048, fols. 151-152.
