Winter introduces himself. He came across a Roman Lituus, or copper trumpet. He was having a ditch dug when the crewmen happened upon the artifact. The instrument was ‘in so many pieces yt I dont well know what to make of it’. Attached is a drawing of the Lituus, with the caption: ‘A Draught of a Copper Trumpet found about Eight Inches under the surface of ye Earth in makeing a drain through a Meadow att Griffinrath in ye County of Killdare by the Revd Sankey Winter Dean of Killdare Febry 15 1725[.] Laid Down by a scale of four Inches in an Inch’.
