Most of the letter is too faded to make out except for a few words. “Kidneys” Henry Herbert (1689-1750) was 9th Earl of Pembroke and had a keen interest in architecture. Upon George I’s accession Herbert was appointed Lord of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales. He was also close to George II (T. P. Connor, ‘Herbert, Henry, ninth earl of Pembroke and sixth earl of Montgomery (c.1689–1750)’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, May 2009 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/13033, accessed 2 July 2014]).
