Lhwyd thanks Sloane for ‘the noblest present I was ever favoured with, or am ever like to be’. He does not know enough about the natural histories of the countries discussed in Sloane’s work to correct any errata, but he will try. Lhwyd hopes to see Sloane’s museum and will send any fossils he comes across. Edward Lhwyd (1659/60-1709) was a naturalist and philologist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1708. Sir Hans Sloane described him as the best naturalist in Europe (Brynley F.
