Vallisneri discusses the state of Italian science and the desirability of forming an Italian Academy. He describes the marvels of nature he observed during his Italian travels. He is bothered by the fact that Sloane has not written him. Vallisneri is concerned that Sloane does not want to correspond with him, but will write him regardless. Antonio Vallisneri (1661-1730) was a medical scientist, physician, and naturalist who held prestigious chairs of medicine at the University of Padua from 1700 to his death. His approach to science was greatly influenced by Leibniz, Conti, and Galileo’s experimental methodology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Vallisneri).
