Ridout’s father was Sloane’s acquaintance. He hopes to procure a recommendation, for he wants to apply for positions with the local gentry. Ridout runs a surgery that was previously under the tutelage of ‘an Antient Surgeon’ called Mr Handley. Mr Neale, the local apothecary, would also appreciate a letter of recommendation. T. Ridout was a surgeon.
