Adair apologizes in regards to an unstated ‘matter’, apparently relating to the appointment of a deputy. The author is possibly the son of Patrick Adair. Patrick Adair (1624-1693/4) was a Presbyterian minister and historian. Adair and his co-religionists were at odds with the Westminster Parliament and its ecclesiastical policies following the execution of Charles I in 1649, and started a covert ministry in spite of the new regime. Adair welcomed William II to England in 1689 and Ireland in 1690 as representative of the Ulster Presbyterians. (Finlay Holmes.
