Keill did not formally attend medical school, but through the patronage of Sloane he obtained the degree of MD from Cambridge. Sloane helped Keill enter into medical practice in Northampton (Anita Guerrini, Keill, James (16731719), Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, Jan 2008 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/15255, accessed 2 June 2011]).

Patient Details

  • Patient info
    Name: Mr. Tryon
    Gender:
    Age:
  • Description
  • Diagnosis

Cough; several loose stools per day; constant and unremitting fever; 90 pulses per minute; the sight or mention of the bark puts him into an agony and sets him vomiting.

  • Treatment
    Previous Treatment:

    Bled.

    Ongoing Treatment:

Bleeding has been stopped; no reason to use Mr Cypriano's medicine. He is being given infusions of 'Terra Iaponica' with laudanum at night and the pectoral drink during the day.

    Response:

The current ongoing treatments are handled well because they do not have the 'irritating sharpness' of other treatments, which serve to aggravate Tryon's cough.
