Transcription
Geoffroy sends copies of his thesis, but notes that there is a case of books for Sloane stored in Calais, the sending of which has been impossible until now due to the war. He describes the Academie royale des sciences’ experiments with Tschirnhaus’s burning glass – verre brulant – and mentions Homberg’s new discovery. Amontons has invented a new thermometer with which they have been experimenting with the measurement of temperatures. Etienne Francois Geoffroy (1672-1731) was an apothecary and physician who studied at Montpellier, like Sloane, and worked at the Jardin du Roi and College Royal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etienne_Francois_Geoffroy).
