Hickes received ‘The Rarity’. He feels indebted to Sloane and the Royal Society. Hickes tried to meet Sloane in London, but was too ill to follow through. George Hickes (1642-1715) was a bishop of the nonjuring Church of England and Anglo-Saxon scholar (Theodor Harmsen, ‘Hickes, George (1642–1715)’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, Jan 2008 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/13203, accessed 21 June 2011]).
