Brydges informs Sloane of an expedition to Africa. Mr Lynn, ‘Secretary to the African Company’, is the bearer. He is to answer Sloane’s questions and explain ‘the Nature of Drugs, plants, and spices’ they might find there. James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos (1674-1744) was a politician, patron of the arts, and, like Sloane, on the Board of Governors of the Foundling Hospital.
