Wallace met with Sloane’s brother in Portsmouth and found him most obliging. There is another physician in the area and he doubts there will be enough business for the both of them. To prevent himself becoming idle, Wallace has turned his attention towards natural history. He asks Sloane to tell him how many articles he has published in the Philosophical Transactions. Wallace notes that the local Earls and Dukes have houses nearby and no physicians in their service. He claims the physicians have all been forced from the town by apothecaries. With Sloane’s support, Wallace believes his chances of finding work will improve. James Wallace was a physician.
