Grey received Sloane’s letter and read it to her father, who approves of Sloane’s suggestion that a foundling hospital should be founded, modelled on Italian hospitals. She suggests the rich men of London might fund such a project. Further, she thinks a charity ought to be founded to aid persecuted Protestants and the rural poor of England. Mary Grey (nee Tufton) (d. 1785) was the daughter of Thomas Tufton, 6th Earl of Thanet, and Lady Catharine Cavendish. She married Anthony Grey, Earl of Harold, in 1718. After the latter’s death she married John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower, in 1736 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Grey,_Earl_of_Harold; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Tufton,_6th_Earl_of_Thanet).
