Petit has long wanted a reason to write to Sloane. He introduces himself, describing what he would like to contribute to medicine and science. Jean Louis Petit (1674-1750) was a Parisian surgeon and inventor of the tourniquet. In 1715 he became a member of l’Académie des sciences and was named director of l’Académie royale de chirurgie when it was founded in 1731 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Louis_Petit).
