Transcription
Breyne thanks Sloane for sending the second volume of Catesby’s History of Carolina, the latest Philosophical Transactions, and a ‘Draught of ye Aloë Americana’. He is pleased with the ‘Book of Plants, printed by ye Gardners about London’, which was sent by Miller. Breyne requests that Sloane pass his thanks on to Miller. He is grateful for Sloane’s recommendation. Breyne’s latest dissertation has not yet been printed. He asks Sloane to procure more works by Catesby and Martin. Johann Philipp Breyne (1680-1764) was a German botanist, zoologist, and entomologist known primarily for his work on the Polish cochineal, or Porphyrophora polonica, used in red dye production. He became a fellow of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1715 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Philipp_Breyne).
