John Armstrong (1674-1742) was a military engineer. He served as Lieutenant in St John’s Regiment of Foot (1691), under the Duke of Marlborough, as Major-General and Quartermaster-General (1713), Chief Engineer of England (1714-death), Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Foot in Ireland (1717), and Master Surveyor of the Ordnance (1722).
