Ezechiel de Spanheim (1629-1710) was born in Geneva and studied at the University of Leyden. He became Professor of Rhetoric in Geneva in 1650. He tutored Charles I Louis, Elector of Palatine’s son and became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1679. William Newton praises Sloane and Sir Isaac Newton’s participation in the ‘study of Natural philosophy’. He is interested every time ‘some hidden treasure or rare production of nature’ is discovered. William explains that a friend’s workers were searching the ‘Seacliffs’ and found ‘great quantitys of silver ore’. He asks that Sloane inform Sir Isaac Newton and the Royal Society.

In 1708 his Itinera aplina tira was published in London. It was dedicated to the Royal Society.
