Adair apologizes in regards to an unstated ‘matter’, apparently relating to the appointment of a deputy.
The author is possibly the son of Patrick Adair. Patrick Adair (1624-1693/4) was a Presbyterian minister and historian. Adair and his co-religionists were at odds with the Westminster Parliament and its ecclesiastical policies following the execution of Charles I in 1649, and started a covert ministry in spite of the new regime. Adair welcomed William II to England in 1689 and Ireland in 1690 as representative of the Ulster Presbyterians. (Finlay Holmes. Richard Waller was a natural philosopher and translator who worked as the Royal Society’s secretary. Charlett thanks Sloane for the donation of his book. It has been placed in the public library. Charlett’s Society has not had a meeting in some time, though they have chosen a secretary and treasurer. There is no reason for the Society not to meet, for all ‘seem willing to assemble’. Charlett hopes things improve for the group.

Northleigh asks Sloane to procure the best microscopes he can find. He discusses lenses and assures Sloane he will pay for everything. Northleigh is looking forward to Malpighi’s new work. He writes of a new German book on man midwifery, which is ‘approvd I believe by Their Universitys’.
John Northleigh (1656/7-1705) was a physician and pamphleteer. He trained as a lawyer before studying medicine and setting up a practice in Exeter. Northleigh published several works on contemporary politics (Andrew M. Thomas Hearne (bap. 1678, d. 1735) was an antiquary and diarist. He began working at the Bodleian Library in 1701. A nonjuror, his refusal to take an oath of allegiance to King George I led to his dismissal from the Bodleian in 1716. He discharged almost a half pint blood from the mouth which had never experienced before. He also experienced "now & then a little pungent & twitching pain" and difficulty expanding his lungs and breathing freely.

Previous Treatment: He was bled immediately and abstained from drinking anything about milk and eating anything but a little pigeon. Later, "by the Dutchesses direction" had taken laudanum and some Lucatellus Balsom which he will continue until Sunday when Sloane will give him further direction.
