Molyneux begins his letter by referring to the enclosed, a thank-you gift for Sloane from Molyneux’s brother. He inquires as to whether a tract of his brother’s on an Irish insect, passed through Mr Locke, ever made it into Sloane’s hands. Molyneux reminds Sloane about his desire to have a copy of Newton’s ‘Phil. Nat. Prin. Math.’, which he hopes Sloane can provide for him. Molyneux was a philosopher and constitutional writer who became deeply involved in Irish affairs (James G. O’Hara, Molyneux, William (16561698), Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, Jan 2008 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/18929, accessed 4 July 2011]).

Molyneux thanks Sloane for the eight editions of the Transactions he recently sent him. He laments that the small token of appreciation he sent Sloane in return is inadequate. Molyneux is delighted to see that some of his own ideas made it into Transactions #230. Molyneux was a philosopher and constitutional writer who became deeply involved in Irish affairs (James G. O’Hara, Molyneux, William (16561698), Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, Jan 2008 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/18929, accessed 4 July 2011]).

Ray is sorry to hear that Sloane’s wife has been ill and hopes it is because of a pregnancy, ‘especially because I have not heard that you have as yet had any issue by her. I am glad she is in a hopefull way of doing well & pray ut pulchria facint te prole parentum, if she hath not already done’. Ray laments that Sherard left so suddenly. While he is excited for Sherard going overseas, Ray will no longer be receiving the dried plant samples that Sherard had promised him. Sloane had previously inquired about a gentleman ‘unable to pay the Debito conjugale’. Ray gives Sloane a list of plants that are said to be helpful for erectile dysfunction, as Sloane had apparently previously inquired on behalf of a gentleman unable to consummate his marriage. Ray concludes that in terms of medical treatments, Sloane himself probably knows more than Ray does. Ray was a theologian and naturalist who collected and catalogued his botanical findings in the much lauded Historia plantarum (1686, 1688) (Scott Mandelbrote, Ray , John (16271705), Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, Oct 2005 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/23203, accessed 18 June 2013]).

[fol. 315] Sr Sunday Aug. 10. 1699. I endeavourd a visit to you yesterday & a visit of just Respect. But it was not without another Errand, & what St. Paul would call a greater then that, namely, of Charity. The occasion of it will bee told you from a Neigh- -bour of yours, my extraordinary friend, Mrs. Harrison. I have made some way toward what wee desire, as you will see by a paper that will bee shewen you. What make mee ye more sol- -licitous to you in it, is, that to morrow mor- -ning is likely to determine all wee are to hope for in it; & the whole (I understand) depends upon ye Opinion that shall bee given in ye Case by Dr. Pitts, to whom I am entirely a Stranger, but have him described to mee for a very Good Man, & one therefore that in soe charitable a cause as this is, will not (I hope) bee easily ledd to pronounce ye Case of an indigent Wretch incureable; which is to give her up to perish. The Governours you will see, are disposed already to favour my Request, & I would not despayre but your interposeing in it with Dr. Pitts, would make it successefull; which would (besides its being otherwise a most worthy Act) say an extraor- -dinary Obligation upon. Your most humble Servnt. Pepys The President Sr. Wm. Prichard is not (I am told) in Towne. But should hee bee, & in Court, I have reason to believe, ye use of my Name to him, in such a Cause as this, would finde.

Pepys was a naval official who is best known as a result of the publication of his diaries, which recount the various political and social happenings of his day (C. S. Knighton, Pepys, Samuel (16331703), Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, Jan 2008 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/21906, accessed 19 June 2013]).
