Bagford informs Sloane that Mr Jonson has found a rare Latin book at an auction, resembling one he had seen at Cambridge. Jonson is on his way to show the book, which contains three volumes, to Sloane. The first volume includes a history of the revolutions and a legendary story about St John. The second is a collection of Bible stories. The third is called ‘ye Art of Dying’.
John Bagford was a bookseller based in Holborn and dealt with some of the preeminent collectors of his day including Sloane, Samuel Pepys, Humfrey Wanley, and Thomas Hearne. Fuller thanks Sloane for the gift of his ‘Natural History of Jamaica’. He is impressed by Sloane’s work, noting that it will improve the island’s reputation for two reasons. Firstly, it proves that the illnesses and distempers appearing in Jamaica appear in England too. Secondly, it demonstrates that local plants cure local diseases. Fuller will be in London in about ten days to thank Sloane personally.
John Fuller, Senior married Elizabeth Rose, daughter of Fulke and Elizabeth Rose of Jamaica, in 1703. He managed the family sugar plantations in Jamaica and in 1705 took control of the family furnace where he became an ironmaster and gunfounder. His wife’s mother later married Sir Hans Sloane, making Sloane Fuller’s stepfather-in-law (J. S. Thoresby asks whether Sloane received the antiquities he sent. He tells Sloane that it has been about a year since he received a letter from him. Thoresby would like his work published and puts himself at Sloane’s service.
Ralph Thoresby wrote “The Topography of Leedes” in 1715 and was interested in the topography of Yorkshire in general.
