Groenveldt asks if he may borrow a Dutch treatise on leprosy.
John Groenveldt (bap.1648 d.1715/16) alias Greenfield, was a physician and surgeon. He began studying medicine at the University of Leiden and finished his degree at Utrect in 1670. Greenfield joined the Colegium Medicum and had a successful medical practice with partner Henricus Velthuys in Amsterdam where they provided surgical and medical services as well as administered medicines. He moved to London and joined the Royal College of Physicians in 1683. He fought censors and several law cases over some of his medicines which caused his practice to decline in the early 1700s. Steigertahl received a small treatise from Mr Cheseldon. Dr Stuart is supposed to perform a surgery on a patient’s pelvis. He thinks it might be too difficult. The surgery is to take place at ‘l’Hopital de St Bartholome’. Mr Cyprianus has been known to perform the operation. Steigertahl writes of the situation regarding the late Engelbert Kaempfer’s collection. It seems J.H. Kaempfer, Engelbert’s nephew, will accept Sloane’s offer. Mr Scheele has the money ready for the transaction. The King is doing well, but missed the hunt.
Johann Georg Steigertahl (1666-1740) was the personal physician to George I of England. He was a member of the Royal Society and secured the purchase of Engelbert Kaempfer’s collection of East Asian curiosities for Sir Hans Sloane in 1723 (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Georg_Steigerthal).

Scheuchzer sends a copy of Morgagni’s ‘Adversaria Anatomica’. The author asked him to share it with his English friends, through Dr Georg Werndlin. Scheuchzer asks Sloane to bring the book to the attention of the Royal Society and to let him know what they think of it. He sends a manuscript of his own on fish, likely the ‘Piscium Querelse et Vindiciae’. He will forward his barometrical observations at the end of the year.

Russell laments the illness of a surgeon. The man’s death would be a ‘publick loss’, for he was the only one to be trusted to perform surgeries. Russell discusses a ‘Collection of Ranunculi from Candia’ that may interest Sloane. He is willing to accompany Sloane to see them in Woburn.
Wriothesley Russell, 2nd Duke of Bedford (1680-1711) matriculated at Oxford in 1696. Between 1701 and 1711 he was Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, and Middlesex.
