Copley thanks Sloane for the copies of the Philosophical Transactions and requests more books. In particular, he wants to know if ‘Camdens Britannia be come out’. He asks if Sloane knows anyone interested in acquiring lodging in the Temple. Mr Sanderson, an attorney, has the keys to the building, which is ‘ye Low Leaded building in fig tree court’. Sir Godfrey Copley was a politician and active member of the Royal Society. He was elected a Fellow of the latter in 1691 (C. I. Sherard is glad that Krieg and Vernon are in London again. He asks Sloane to be one of their subscribers in his stead, so as to improve his collection. He mentions the work of amateur Italian botanists as well as ‘P. Kammeli’, which refers to the Jesuit priest and botanist Georg Joseph Kamel, who works in the Philippines. Sherard discusses some books received as well as those he intends to buy. He may travel more in future and outlines his tentative plans. He includes a list of books he has procured. Sherard was a botanist and cataloguer. He worked for the Turkish Company at Smyrna where he collected botanical specimens and antiques (D. E. Waller read over Sloane’s suggestions for the Parisian Academie’s rules and regulations. Waller worries that the Royal Society, comprised wholly of volunteers, ‘will be unwilling to be too much confined and obliged’ to the particulars of Sloane’s recommendations. He discusses the potential effects of the proposed regulations on the publishing of scientific treatises. Richard Waller was a natural philosopher and translator who worked as the Royal Society’s secretary. Joseph Ames

Joseph Ames (bap.1687, d.1759) bibliographer and antiquary, elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1743. He was admitted to the Society of antiquaries and contributed to their Thursday meetings. He frequented university libraries as well as those of the members of both societies.

[fol. 11] Fort St. George July 24 1702. Much honoured Sir I presume to give you this truble of this letter to acknowledge your manyfold favours and to present you my humble respects with this short acct of our voyage hithertill. The fifth of March we sailed out of the Downs, Touched at Modora the 24th, And made the Cape of Good-Hope May 31st. Whence we arrived here to day in about five Moneths from England which is reckoned a good passage, all our Company blessed be God in good health and none missing. We are Bound hence in a few dayes for Bengala and thence its like for Malacca. I have nothing so remarkable or Curious in our Voyage hithertill as to be worth your while to read. If any thing occurs dureing our stay in the Indies I shall hold my self very happy if and acct thereof at any time shall be any wayes acceptable to you, being with humble Respect Much Honoured Sir Your most humble and obliged servt Alexander Stuart

Stuart was a physician and natural philosopher. He served as a ship’s surgeon from 1701-1707 and corresponded with Sloane while at sea, sending him natural history specimens.
