Thoresby has not heard from Sloane since 1704. He is not sure if his letters regarding Roman coins made it to Sloane. Thoresby has not seen any Philosophical Transactions since that year and asks Sloane to send copies to him. He asks if Dr Lister has written anything regarding the Roman monument found at York. Thoresby was an antiquary and topographer. He expanded his fathers Musaeum Thoresbyanum impressively, and his collection brought him into discussion with many important political and scholarly figures (P. E. Preston received a repository of all the rare plants from the finest gardens in Holland. He sends the most curious entries to Sloane and requests all of the Philosophical Transactions from 1703 to the present. Preston was a physician and botanist who established a lengthy correspondence with Sloane, exchanging plants, seeds, books and information. Covel thanks Sloane for his favours. He asks for another on behalf of a friend, Francis Vigani, who wants to fill the vacant chemist’s position at Apothecary Hall. John Covel (Colvill, Covell) (1638-1722) attended Christ’s College Cambridge, obtaining a BA in 1658 and MA in 1659. He studied medicine and then served in office at Constantinople beginning in 1672. During this time, Covel collected paintings, coins, medals, books, curiosities, and manuscripts while studying the Greek Church. He returned to England and eventually became the master of Christ’s College and keeping up correspondence with may English scholars. Gray received Sloane’s query regarding the bones discovered at Chartham. His brother has illustrations of what was there uncovered. Gray encloses a drawing of the bones (Sloane MS 4038 fol. 275). The most recent Philosophical Transactions discussed the bones.
