[fol. 141] Dearest Sr Univ. Coll. Oct. 22. 98. I gave Mr Pepys our very excellent Friend, lately an Account of some occurrences here, to which I must referre you. I am very desirous you should make what use you please of our Indian MSS, and have accordingly here inclosed a Copy of the letter sent to me from Fort St George. It seems to me very proper to desire the Favour of you to publish an account of them in the Transactions, that so the Learned world may know what we have of this nature. I will order Mr Wanly to draw up some Account for you of our Catalogue of MSS, that may both explain and recommend it to the Curious of all Qualitys and Professions. I had almost forgot to acquaint you, that the 8th of November being our Public Day of the Anniversary Visitation of the Bodleian Library, it would be very convenient I should then deliver the Indian MSS, to the Vice Chancellor & Curators. Perhaps Mr Cransford may be willing to procure the Letter from Fort St George. Kirke is unable to meet Sloane at Gresham College, for an uncle of his ‘is fal’n very dangerously ill’. The uncle is ‘the Author of that small tract I showed you about the soul in answer to Dr Bentley’. He promises Sloane to serve him in any case and will continue to work on examining spring waters. Thomas Kirke (1650-1706) was an antiquary and topographer.
