    Name: N/A Unnamed Lady
    Gender:
    Age:childbearing age
  • Description

thin habit of body, subject to sharp humours and weakness upon her nerves. Violent skin eruptions during fifth or sixth month of pregnancy, which lasted until birth.

  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment
    Previous Treatment:

used issues, now dried, for her nerves. After birth, surgeon gave her sweetening woods and purges for the skin. Believed the treatments to have been mercurial, as when she did not purge completely after a double dose, she developed gutta serena. Her vision also seemed to be blackened. Sent for Eratt to treat 'want of spirits' in retina or optic nerves.

    Ongoing Treatment:

Eratt prescribed a perpetual blister to her neck. For the opthalmia after her cold, he prescribed cooling waters with tutia preparat and night draughts. She also had an issue in the leg, but it is less clear whether Eratt or the surgeon put it there.

    Response:

After mercurial treatments by a surgeon, she developed gutta serena. Her vision also seemed to be blackened. Sent for Eratt to treat 'want of spirits' in retina or optic nerves. Eratt's initial treatment was helpful, as she recovered strength and appetite; her vision improved. Then she caught cold and developed an opthalmia. He successfully treated the inflammation and her vision improved somewhat with the least inflamed eye.

Ferguson also notes that if Sloane gets any interesting books that he would appreciate to be made aware of them. Also sends his ‘hearty Love and service to Br William & his Lady’. Victor Ferguson (d. 1729) was a physician of Newtown, near Belfast (Toby C. Bernard, A New Anatomy of Ireland: The Irish Protestants, 1649-1770 (Connecticut: Yale University Press, 2003), ch. 5; “Fergusons of Belfast” URL: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~colin/FergusonsOfIreland/Belfast.htm).

    Previous Treatment:

In a previous letter (Sloane MS 4075 f. 122) the author noted a long list of ailments including a tumour on his anus and piles. He also suffered from a stomach tumour and a disordered stomach. For all of the above he treated himself with various medicines and regimens. He noted that he had two friends who are doctors in Dublin who counseled him to do various "Rationall" courses of treatment. But he refused their advice and the advice of his relations. They all considered him to be a dead man.

    Ongoing Treatment:

Despite the advice of everyone else he laid out a system of care for himself including diet.

    Response:

The treatment he laid out (it is unclear as to whether Sloane gave him advice) made his stomach much better and he planned to go abroad for Christmas. He thanked Sloane for his advice of a "few easy and rationall medicins".

    Response:

Sloane's prescription seemed to help the goutish pains, although the swellings in his foot and reddish legs continued. They wondered if purging should be stopped. Since the gout, the swelling in his body and belly went, but had worsened in his thighs, legs and foot. His stomach bore the vomits, which helped his breathing. The urine quantity was sufficient, but high-coloured.
