Did not find in his excrement the egg-like items he had previously seen. Bowels disordered and loose. Normally no more than two stools a day, but now very frequent. No pain at the time, but felt like guts coming away too. Became pale, with sunk spirits after each bowel movement.

Ongoing Treatment: He was taking spa water but stopped because it disagreed with him. He continued to take the electuary and has ordered Bristol water but would not take it until Sloane agreed.
Response: He also had a cold which led to swollen gums and an unpleasant taste in his mouth. Later his gums also appeared blacker than usual. He wondered if the illness of his bowels had traveled to his gums.

Diagnosis
Pain in the kidney and hypochondria. The kidney pain is new. It is not hard or distended. Urine is copious and well-coloured, so probably not nephritic.

Treatment
Previous Treatment: Asses milk and testaceous powders; soft and cooling diet; gargarisms and injections; issue in arm; purge once or twice weekly; blister to back; bleeding at foot.
Ongoing Treatment: For kidney pain, applying fomentations, liniments and cataplasms. Internally, she is taking pilul. e Galb: Gum. Ammoniac. Sperm. Cet: millep. sal succin &c.
Response: The patient "found very great relief as to the particular complaints mention'd in my [previous] letter". But she is now finding an unusual pain in left kidney extending into hypochondrium and affecting region of spleen. Any pressure causes "great pain & uneasieness, & sometimes a difficulty in breathing".

Lloyd apologizes for not writing sooner. He has not come across any curiosities. Lloyd has made some acquaintances in Dublin, but asks Sloane to make additional recommendations. He explains his misfortune in London the previous winter, centring around a false piece of silver which he believed to be real. Lloyd had apparently shown this silver to people at some coffeehouses and because he owed a debt to someone he was imprisoned for not paying it. The accuser possibly believed the precious metal was genuine.

Massey sends a strange substance taken from an old sheep in Lincolnshire. He asks that Sloane show it to Mr Cowper. Massey will soon send a sketch of a worm that came out of a man’s nose when he sneezed.
Richard Middleton Massey (1678-1743) attended Brasenose College, Oxford but left before obtaining a degree. In 1706 he was admitted Extra-Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians and settled in Wisbech where he practiced medicine. Massey was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1712.
