Ezechiel de Spanheim (1629-1710) was born in Geneva and studied at the University of Leyden. He became Professor of Rhetoric in Geneva in 1650. He tutored Charles I Louis, Elector of Palatine’s son and became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1679. As a diplomat he represented German states in Paris and London.

Henri Basnage de Beauval (1657-1710) was a French Huguenot historian, lexicographer, and journal editor. He published books on lexicography, religious tolerance, and history.

Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli (1658-1730) was an Italian soldier and naturalist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1691. Marsigli published several books, established a printing-house, and founded an Institute of Sciences and Arts in 1715.

Henry Hunt (d. 1713) came to work for the Royal Society in 1672/3. He worked as an assistant to Robert Hooke and was appointed Operator in 1676. He was was designated Keeper of the Library in 1696 and then Keeper of the Repository and Housekeeper

Charles Maitland (1668-1748) was a Scottish surgeon who, with Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, introduced smallpox inoculation to England. His first demonstration was to the Royal College of Physician in 1721. Then in 1722 an experiment was carried out on six prisoners at Newgate Prison under the direction of Sir Hans Sloane.
