George Louis Teissier

George Louis Teissier (d. 1742) was a German-born physician. He was physician to George I and George II as well as Westminster Hospital from 1728 to 1733. He also worked at St George’s Hospital and to Chelsea Hospital. Teissier was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1725.

William Hamill

William Hamill was agent and trust for the officers and soldiers at the garrisons of Londonderry and Enniskilling in Ireland. He published a memorial ‘Officers and Soldiers for their service in Ireland in the late Revolution‘ in 1714 and ‘A view of the Danger and Folly of Being Publick-Spirited and Sincerely Loving One’s Country…‘ in 1721 campaigning for pay that had not been paid to the soldiers since the revolution in Ireland.

Johann Heinrich Linck (1674-1734) was a German pharmacist. He took over his father’s pharmacy in 1717 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1718.

Johann Ernst Grabe

Johann Ernst Grabe (1666 to 1711), also known as John Ernest Grabe, was a professor of theology and history. He studied Christian religious conflicts, was ordained in 1700, and was Chaplain of Christ Church, Oxford.

Joseph Browne

Joseph Browne (bap.1673 d. in or after 1721) was a physician and satirist known as a ‘notorious quack’. He graduated from Jesus College Cambridge in 1694 with MB and assumed the title MD, though it is not sure from which college. Browne practiced as a physician in Yorkshire and published satirical works that got him accused of libelling Queen Anne’s Administration. He clashed with the College of Physicians and lectured against William Hervey’s theory of the Circulation of Blood. However, Browne did translate significant medical works to English.

Joseph Pitten de Tournefort

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) was a French botanist who developed the idea of taxonomically organizing plants according to the concept of genus. He published the famous Elements de botanique (1694) and travelled the Mediterranean and Caucuses to research their flora from 1700 to 1702.

Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle

Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657-1757) was a French author. He became a member of L’Academie francaise in 1691 and from 1697 he was perpetual secretary to L’Academie des Sciences. Fontenelle was very popular with French high society and his books were widely read.
