Laurent Garcin (1683-1752) was a physician and botanist. He studied in the Netherlands and served as a naval surgeon from 1720 to 1729, traveling throughout the East Indies. He described plants from Java, Malacca, Persia, and Arabia. Garcin sent Indian and Chinese medical information to Herman Boerhaave. He settled in Leiden and corresponded with Antoine de Jussieu and others, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1731. Garcin’s work was published in the memoires de l’academie des sciences de l’Institut de France Académie des sciences.

A Guinea Cock and Hen were given mee last
Aprill which I sent to my House at Wilsden in Midlx.
where they proved such extraordinary breeders that
tho’ the Hen Hapned to be kil’d ^by a dogg^ the of thee
summer as shee was sitting upon her Nest upon
eleaven eggs, which were near Hatching; Net I had
bred from this pair of fowls in this season only; forty
Nine young ones, which at Cause to Be as bigg as
the old ones (except one who I send you as a Curiosity
on being a Monster) Besides several eggs that were
spoil’d or Never formd, as the hen always made
her Nest in some very private place in ye fields.
The Bird I send you has Not grown near so large
as any of the others, and has three leggs: one of =
which is Not used by the Creature in Walking; Butt
Grows out from a sort of thigh which (as I
Apprehend) Joyns to the rump bone, and has a plain
foot with four Claws, of a flesh Colour, Butt
seems to look a little Withered like a legg that
Has had some Hurt.
Thee Creature is very lively: and seems to be in as
good Health as any, of the rest.

Groenveldt claims the rumours that his eyesight is poor and he is too old to practice medicine are completely false. He blames the rumours on people from ‘abroad’.
John Groenveldt (bap.1648 d.1715/16) alias Greenfield, was a physician and surgeon. He began studying medicine at the University of Leiden and finished his degree at Utrect in 1670. Greenfield joined the Colegium Medicum and had a successful medical practice with partner Henricus Velthuys in Amsterdam where they provided surgical and medical services as well as administered medicines. He moved to London and joined the Royal College of Physicians in 1683. He fought censors and several law cases over some of his medicines which caused his practice to decline in the early 1700s. Thomas Tufton (1644-1729), 6th Earl of Thanet, was a nobleman and politician. He served as Captain of the Troop of Horse, Member of Parliament for Appelby from 1668 to 1679, and was eventually invested as a Privy Councillor in 1702. He was Lord-Lieutenant of Cumberland from 1712 to 1714 (G.E. Cokayne; with Vicary Gibbs, H.A. Doubleday, Geoffrey H. Scheuchzer sends the rest of his barometrical observations for 1708. He asks Sloane to send barometrical measures and information on the amount of rainfall in London for 1708 so that he can compare them with his findings. Gijsbert Cuper and Valknerius are mentioned as possible successors to Peter Hotton who died in January.
Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (1672-1733) was a Swiss scholar and physician. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1703 and his work was published in the Philosophical Transactions. In 1708 his Itinera aplina tira was published in London. It was dedicated to the Royal Society. His largest project was the Itinera per Helvetiae alpines regions facta annis 1702-1711, dedicated to his travels and published in four volumes in 1723 at Leiden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Jakob_Scheuchzer).

Gottfried Sellius (1704-1767) was a German academic, translator, and initiator of the project that led to the production of the Encyclopédie. He studied at Marburg and Leiden and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1733
