William Burnet

William Burnet (1688-1729) was a colonial governor and son of Gilbert Burnet, Bishop of Salisbury. He served in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

John Fuller Jr.

John Fuller (1706-1755) was Sir Hans Sloane’s grandson. He worked as an ironmaster, gunfounder, and eventually became MP of Boroughbridge in Yorkshire.

Ambrose Godfrey Sr.

Ambrose Godfrey Sr. (1660-1741) was a chemist. He was first employed by Robert Boyle and went on to work at Apothecaries’ Hall. Godfrey analysed the chemical properties of stones, waters, and other materials for Hans Sloane and the Royal Society. His work was published in the Philosophical Transactions from 1731 to 1736.

John Hadley

John Hadley (1682-1744) was a natural philosopher and mathematician. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1717 and invented the navigational instrument known as the octant, or Hadley’s quadrant.

Denis Papin
