Desaguliers provides Petiver with a list of prices for an unspecified quantity of commodities. Desaguliers was the son of French Huguenots who quit France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). Richard Waller was a natural philosopher and translator who worked as the Royal Society’s secretary. He also served on its council and edited the Philosophical Transactions.

Charles Cadogan (1685-1776), 2nd Baron Cadogan was the younger brother of William Cadogan, Earl Cadogan, who was an army officer and diplomat. Charles was an army officer, elected MP for Reading in 1716, and married Sir Hans Sloane’s daughter Elizabeth in 1717.

George Cheyne (1671/2-1743) was a physician and published many books on philosophical and health-related topics. He promoted taking the waters at Bath and his popular treatise ‘An Essay of Health and Long Life’ (1724) served as a guide to good living. He suffered from extreme obesity, at one point weighing roughly 448 pounds.
