Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli

Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli (1658-1730) was an Italian soldier and naturalist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1691. Marsigli published several books, established a printing-house, and founded an Institute of Sciences and Arts in 1715.

Govard Bidloo

Govard Bidloo (1649-1713) was a predominant Dutch physician whose research focussed primarily on anatomy research. He was a professor of anatomy at The Hague giving lectures on anatomical dissection before he became the professor of anatomy and surgery at Leiden in 1694. He became a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1696. He was the physician of William III, King of England, who died in his arms in 1702. His most famous publication is Anatomia Humani Corporis (1685) illustrated by Gerard de Lairesse featuring images and notes of living and dissected human figures.

David Parry

David Parry (1682?-1714) was a Welsh scholar and assistant to the naturalist Edward Lhuyd. From 1709 to 1714 he was Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum.

Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) ran away from home at age 17 to work as a printer in Philadelphia and set off to London shortly thereafter. He worked as a typesetter near the Church of St Bartholomew-the-Great in Smithfield. The asbestos purse he gave Hans Sloane has remained in the latter’s collection to the present. He returned to America in 1726. Franklin became a noted scientist, writer, diplomat, statesman, and Founding Father of the United States of America.

George Montagu

George Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (ca. 1683-1739) was a British politician. From 1705 to 1715 he was MP for Northampton and served, at various times, as Auditor of the Exchequer, Privy Councillor, and Lord Justice

Joseph Browne

Joseph Browne (bap.1673 d. in or after 1721) was a physician and satirist known as a ‘notorious quack’. He graduated from Jesus College Cambridge in 1694 with MB and assumed the title MD, though it is not sure from which college. Browne practiced as a physician in Yorkshire and published satirical works that got him accused of libelling Queen Anne’s Administration. He clashed with the College of Physicians and lectured against William Hervey’s theory of the Circulation of Blood. However, Browne did translate significant medical works to English.

Richard Beard

Richard Beard (c. 1688-1734) was a physician. He took his MA at Glasgow (1709) and MD at Leyden (1713). Beard practised at Worcester and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1726.

Johann Daniel Schoepflin (1694-1771) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1728. He was Professor of History and Eloquence at Strasbourg.
