Steigertahl saw several caterpillars at Windsor Green and found others in the garden. He viewed Mr Tobham’s curiosities. The latter gave him a small rose bush branch. The King is well and enjoying ‘le pommes Grenades’ growing in the garden. Tobham also showed Steigertahl rare medals, of which he had read in ‘le livre de Mr. Paruta’ of Sicily. Tobham has new books by Mr Stoschius, Mr Piccart, and Bernardo Oricelli as well as a manuscript published by Mr Davenant. Steigertahl sends a specimen of the ‘Jalappe’ plant.

Balle informs Sloane that De Jussieu is pleased to have been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. De Jussieu recently received some plants from America. Balle hopes that Sloane will see the Chelsea Physic Garden surpass the ‘Royall Garden’ in Paris. Lord Staves desires a catalogue of all the vegetables in the Jardin Royal. Balle mentions an issue between the Pope and Government of France. He asks if there is anything Sloane wants him to tell Geoffroy and offers his service to ‘Doctor Stiegerthal’. He notes that there are many English doctors of great skill, including Dr Bloxham and Dr Mead. Balle requests a list of Fellows of the Royal Society.

Morand responds to Sloane’s question apropos the Colbert manuscripts. Several offers have been made to purchase them. Morand met Mr Cadogan in Paris. He suggests Mr Halley replace the late Signor Bianchini at l’Académie des sciences. Morand is going to write Mr Cheselden to make the same suggestion. He describes the contents of the catalogue; i.e. what was for sale in the auction.
Sauveur-Francois Morand (1697-1773) was a French surgeon and son of John Morand, surgeon at the Hotel des Invalides. Morand was admitted as a surgeon at the Hotel des Invalides in 1724 at the age of 15. He became a Fellow of the Academie des sciences in 1722, Chief Surgeon of the Hospital of Charity in 1730, and Chief Surgeon of the French Guards in 1739.
