William Browne

Sir William Browne gained his MD from Cambridge in 1725 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1726. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1739 and knighted in 1748. Browne published books on a wide range of topics and served the Royal College of Physicians in a number of capacities.

William King

William King was a Church of Ireland clergyman and Archbishop of Dublin. He is considered to be the most important figure within the Church of Ireland of his time. King wrote trenchant critiques of other branches of Christianity as well as theological works.

Margaret Flamsteed

Margaret Flamsteed was the widow of the Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed. They married in 1692. John Flamsteed was an astronomer, had a crucial role in the founding the of the Royal Observatory, and participated in academic debates relating to astronomy.

Richard Holland

Richard Holland was a physician and medical writer. He graduated MD in 1723 at St Catherine’s College, Cambridge. Holland was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1724, Censor in 1728, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1726. His book ‘Observations on the Small Pox’ was published in 1728. Holland died a bachelor in 1730.

Martin Folkes

Martin Folkes was an antiquary and natural philosopher. He was educated at Clare College, Cambridge and inherited a large estate from his father. Folkes was appointed Vice-President of the Royal Society in 1723 and contributed articles to the Philosophical Transactions. After the death of Royal Society President Sir Isaac Newton in 1727 Folkes and Sloane, both vice-presidents, petitioned to succeed him. Sloane won the election and Folkes only returned to the Royal Society Council in 1733. He succeeded Sloane as President from 1741 to 1752.

Jane Blower

Jane Blower (b. 1689) was the daughter of Reverend John Ray, the esteemed botanist and naturalist. John Ray had his daughters aid in the collection of insects during the 1690s. Jane married Joshua Blower, the Rector of Bradwell near Braintree.

James Hodgson

James Hodgson (bap. 1678?, d. 1755) was a mathematician. He was an assistant to the astronomer John Flamsteed from 1695 and the cousin of the architect Sir Christopher Wren.

Stephen Hales

Stephen Hales (1677-1761) was a clergyman and natural philosopher. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1718 and was celebrated for his experiments on the arterial systems of animals, food preservation, and ventilation.

Richard Mead

Richard Mead (1673-1754) was a physician and book collector. He worked at St Thomas’s Hospital from 1703, published several medical treatises, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1705. Mead was involved in debates over the merits of smallpox inoculation and in 1721 was appointed by the Privy Council, with Sir Hans Sloane and John Arbuthnot, to investigate the cause of the plague.
