Tancred Robinson

William Cowper

William Cowper was a surgeon and an anatomist, elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1699. He became embroiled in a plagiarism scandal in 1698 when he was accused of copying Govard Bidloos anatomical work.

Richard Manningham

Sir Richard Manningham was a man-midwife and physician. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1719 and a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in the same year. He wrote a treatise on midwifery and taught courses on the subject for 20 guineas.

Walter Harris

Walter Harris (1647-1732) was a physician whose Catholicism caused him trouble early in his career. In 1682 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians where from 1710 to 1732 he was Lumleian lecturer. He published several works on medicine.

James Petiver

James Petiver was a botanist and entomologist who worked in England. He joined the Royal Society in 1695. He travelled little, getting his specimens locally or from contacts. He travelled to Leiden on behalf of Sloane to the auction of Paul Hermann’s collection in 1711. Like Sloane, he was a collector and had a collection of several thousand plants. All of these were purchased by Sloane, along with his books and manuscripts, after his death. Nowadays these all reside in the British Museum alongside Sloane’s collection.

Henry Hyde

Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl of Clarendon, was a politician who served as Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland under James II. He went into self-imposed exile to avoid arrest after falling on the wrong side of the Glorious Revolution (1688), but returned to parliamentary politics in the 1690s.
