Hermann asks Sloane about Materia Medica. She is continuing to publish her husband’s works due to Sloane’s encouragement. She writes that others have likewise encouraged her. Hermann requires funds for this endeavour and asks him to forward any money raised for this purpose.

She writes ‘it is the costum in holland that all booksellers set against a book which the [sic] have not print them self so that I am perswathet I have by your direction meet with the best market in Engeland’.

Ongoing Treatment:
Response: The tapping discharged 9 gallons, or 72 1/2 pounds, of coffee coloured water. The swelling had improved but the stomach contracted slowly. She had a better appetite and could walk about her room. She only drank and urinated a little. She and Howman worried that the swelling would return. Howman asked Sloane's opinion as to diuretics and emmenagogues.

Hotton received the Philosophical Transactions and Scheuchzer’s ‘Itinera’. He asks Sloane to procure a copy of Edward Lhwyd’s book on fossils for him, the ‘Lithophylacii britannici ichnographia’. Hotton has not had a chance to send Bayer’s book on fossils. Gunther Schelhammer is writing a dissertation on natron in Amsterdam.

Hotton sends the ‘Adversaria Anatomica’ by Giovanni Battista Morgagni. The latter had sent a copy to Hotton and requested he send it to Sloane. Morgagni also asked that Hotton convey a copy to William Cowper. Hotton asks Sloane to pass the book on to Cowper. He encloses letters from Lavater, catalogues of books, and a botanical treatise. Rivinus is preparing a book on ‘Terris Sigillatis’.

Hotton forgot to send February’s catalogue. He sends it along with March’s. He informs Sloane that Paolo Boccone, the Sicilian botanist, died on December 28, 1704 in his 72nd year at Palermo. Hotton has not heard from John Ray and is concerned about his health. He asks Sloane to forward the enclosed letters to Ray. Volkamer, living in Nuremburg, received the seeds from Sherard.
